AND NOW… ABOUT FITNESS
I am a fitness fiend. I always have been.
You do not have to be a fitness fiend, or even into fitness to get your act together.
But first, here is my body health and fitness story:
From a young age I was involved in dance classes, I was a figure skater for nine years, on the track team in mid-school, and a cheerleader in high school. I still love getting out to exercise, whether my workout is yoga, pilates, a brisk walk, running up and down stairs or riding my bike, I’m always game. I underwent yoga teacher training at the world renowned Aspen Club and Day Spa in Aspen, Colorado, and taught there for a short time before moving back to Los Angeles. After the age of 40 I took up rock climbing in the hard core climbing terrain of Colorado and Utah. I was lucky to meet (and live with for three years) someone who was and is a renowned expert in the field, who also taught me and showed me the ropes (yes, pun intended).
Back in Los Angeles I earned my teaching certification for The Lagree Method (it’s been described as Pilates on steroids, but focuses on core conditioning and strength training), and later got certified via The Sheppard Method as a classically trained Pilates instructor. When I take a Lagree Method class from someone, I plan on getting in a full-body workout that fatigues every muscle in my body, because that’s what the method teaches, and that’s what I teach, when working with clients who want a fully-charged, hard core workout. If our muscles don’t get tired or fatigued during a hard core workout, we are not burning fat or defining our muscles. And if we don’t move slowly to engage the inner, slow-twitch fibers, we aren’t getting the most bang for the buck, exercise-wise! If we do those things, however, our body will burn more calories repairing in the day(s) ahead than it did during class. Now, that’s efficiency in fitness, but I digress.
I incorporated a classical Pilates certification because as I turned the corner after 40, after doing Lagree workouts for five years, my hip flexors, shoulders and knees started to give me trouble. It wasn’t the workout’s fault. It was my AGE and my own lifestyle. If I didn’t want my muscles and joints and other body parts to be in trouble, I needed to get back to the basics and re-learn proper alignment and core-based body movement so I could rehabilitate my own body. Classical Pilates is the essence of the healthy workout. I LOVE IT. I can now take on clients in all ranges of health and fitness and offer a regimen their body, mind and soul will love and reap exponential benefits from.
After the age of 46, I underwent surgeries for my BRCA genetic mutation, and was surprisingly thrust into what I lovingly refer to as “Orchids” (cough – menopause – cough!). It took it’s toll on me mentally, physically and soulfully, and as a result it most definitely took a toll on my relationships. I soon realized that staying lean and fit would not only be vital to my health and longevity, but to my happiness in life as well! As a woman over 40 (and not getting any younger), I had to learn to be vigilant over my own health and wellness. This includes pushing my body beyond where I think it can go, and consuming foods that will benefit me (whether I really want to or not). My zest for living large and truly enjoying every moment (and – er – wine ‘n stuff) keeps me coming back too.
If you’ve never been into exercise or fitness, it is never too late to start, and no step you take is too small. Do it for you. Do it for your family, friends and loved ones. Do it for the world that could gain some great inspiration from simply having you around! Whatever the reason, as they say at Nike, “JUST DO IT!”

AND NOW… ABOUT WOMEN’S HEALTH
I like to say…
Without women among us, not one of us would be here…
Okay, so the same would apply if there were no men on among us, but people, we really need our women.
Listen. I was never a big worry-wort, and I certainly didn’t ever lose sleep over women’s health issues. I’ve always been a proponent of maintaining a positive approach to health and wellness. I still am. I am into fitness because it makes me look and feel better (and allows me to consume some of the tastier things in life)! As a yoga and fitness instructor, I absolutely love working with clients to achieve a great workout they can enjoy and see real results.
My mantra about health always went something like this: you will be healthy if you do all that you know to do — eat well, exercise regularly, de-stress, take care of yourself (mentally, soulfully and physically), and enjoy every moment.

NOTHING LIKE A MUTATION TO CHANGE YOUR WORLD
But when a little thing like a genetic mutation (my own, no less) was brought to my attention, well, it opened my eyes to a world of ailments and dangers for women that required some attention. The mere discovery of the BRCA genetic mutation for Breast & Ovarian Cancer and all that implies, as well as so many other recent disturbing tidbits have brought the issue of women’s health to the top of my list of things worth fighting for (like the fact – as exposed by 60 Minutes – that women have been over medicated (to the detriment of their health) since the beginning of time, because meds have only been tested for men).
My own mother and sister’s deaths (one passing was not related to the other) helped to create a deeper sense of urgency as well. When my sister passed and I discovered I had the BRCA2 mutation, I determined I would do whatever necessary to take care of my health and work to raise awareness and prevent disease and unnecessary illness in other women as well.
This new “awareness” didn’t change my positive outlook or personal mantra about health, wellness and fitness. It merely helped me zero in on the important things in life.
